How Reddit Works: An Introduction

Reddit aka the frontpage of the internet is a social networking and bookmarking site where registered members (redditors) can submit content, such as text posts or direct links. Redditors can also post comments on every story on reddit, and respond back and forth in a conversation-tree of comments. It is a source for what's new and popular on the web.

It is a great example of a site that has become far more than simply a social-networking or link-sharing utility and has grown into a real online community. In fact, reddit is not a single community; it's an engine for creating communities - subreddits.

The site's content is divided into numerous categories (subreddits) and 50 such categories are visible on the front page to new users and those who browse the site without logging in to an account. There's a subreddit for programming, a subreddit for music, and probably a subreddit for your favourite football club.

By default, new users are subscribed to a selection of the most popular subreddits, but you'll get a lot more enjoyment out of the site if you take the time to find and subscribe to ones that appeal to you. After doing so, the front page will change to show a customized listing tailored to your interests.

Reddit features an innovative socially ranked rating and sorting system that allows registered users to vote submissions and comments "up" or "down", thereby making it easy for users to decide which links or posts are good and which ones are junk. Links or posts that receive community approval rise to the top, while cooler stories sink. Hence the front page of reddit is constantly in motion and (hopefully) filled with fresh, interesting links/posts.

Every community (subreddit) on the site starts when a redditor creates it. The creator becomes the first subscriber and the first moderator of the new subreddit. Moderators are redditors who create new communities or are added to existing ones. The moderators of each community decide how to moderate and who to include on their team.

What is Reddit Karma?

When you submit links that other people like and vote for on Reddit, you will get points from the upvotes known as Karma. You get more karma ("link karma" and "comment karma" ) when your posts/comments get upvoted, and lose some when they get downvoted. Your karma accumulate as point values on your user profile. The points do not lead to a prize as they are meant to stand in as a badge of honor for you among your peers.
