Hours after Boko Haram struck in Borno and Adamawa states, grim details of the attacks emerged yesterday.

The death toll rose from 74, which was reported yesterday, to 138.

Eighty-five died in Kawuri village in Borno State, and 53 in Chakawa, Adamawa State.

No fewer than 16 others are believed to be missing in Borno, it was learnt.

Emerging details of the attacks indicated that the insurgents issued three warning letters to Kawuri community before they struck last Sunday, a survivor, Mallam Mohammed Tukur, said.

Tukur said the assailants also destroyed houses, mosques and a market square, adding that they operated for six hours before troops arrived.

Pastor nabbed for raping 13-yr-old girl

OWERRI — The Police in Imo State have arrested the General Overseer and head of a popular church in Ikeduru council area of the state, for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl.
This followed a petition written to the Owerri Police Area Command by the lawyer to the father of the alleged rape victim, Mr Emperor Iwuala.
The father of the victim, a widower and does not want his name in print, had alleged that the pastor severally raped his daughter between 2010 and 2013.
According to him, “Between 2010 and 2013, I was sick and a friend of mine introduced me to the prophet. Because of my sickness, I lost my job as a luxury bus driver and also my accommodation in Naze Owerri.
“Consequently, the prophet offered me accommodation in his house which he also uses as church. I moved in with my two little daughters. Because of my condition then, I did not know that the prophet was taking advantage of my predicament to defile one of my daughters.
“One of the days, his wife caught him trying to abuse my daughter and she raised the alarm, which made the husband to send her packing.

The Miami Beach Police Department said he was detained after racing on a street early on Thursday and had failed an alcohol test.

Seven gay men appeared in a Nigerian court on Wednesday, January 22, on charges of being involved in same-sex relationships.

The case drew thousands of protesters to the court, who threw stones at the men as they were being transported back to prison after the trial, as security forces fired into the air to disperse the angry crowd.

The man threw his girlfriend out of their home because she ate too much meat.

Lawrencia Muneri of Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe, asked a court for an order of protection against her abusive partner.

In response, her boyfriend Malvin Chidawanyika told the court that Muneri was being a nuisance.

Abuja – A football administrator, Emmanuel Adesanya, on Saturday in Abuja advised coach Stephen Keshi to improve the goalkeeping department of the Super Eagles at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Emmanuel Adesanya, the Head of Inter-Clubs Competition Department, Nigeria Football Association (NFA), gave the advice as Nigerians bask in the euphoria of the Eagles’ victory over the Atlas Lions of Morocco.
The Eagles rallied from three goals down to win 4-3 after extra time in their quarter-final encounter in Cape Town, South Africa.

This was contained in a statement issued last night in Abuja by the Secretary to the Commission Mrs Augusta Ogakwu.

The statement further indicates that the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections would take place on 28, February, 2015.

The Commission’s Scribe also released the detailed time table for the Ekiti State governorship elections scheduled to take place in June this year.

The statement shows that June 21, 2014 has been set aside for the conduct of the Ekiti State Governorship election, while the Osun State gubernatorial polls has been scheduled for August 9, 2014.

I confess to looking away in embarrassment and disgust the first time I saw adult men kiss and fondle on TV. It was in a UK based soap opera. Today, years after my first encounter, I still feel uncomfortable— squeamish even— when I see two grown men tongue kiss. I suppose these things need getting used to because I don’t feel that squeamish about lesbians kissing and fondling on TV since I had seen the female version of same sex relationship at least a decade before the male version.

The western world had seen the open display of affection between people of the same gender decades before Africa started witnessing it and has therefore had a longer time to come to terms with the fact that a man can love another man and might indeed want to happily spend the rest of his life with him.

A Three man teenage robbery gang that has been terrorizing residents of Ikot Omin, 8 Miles and Basin Development Authority in Calabar, the Cross River State capital has been nabbed.

Three persons were feared dead after the motor boat on which they were riding from Tincan Island Port to Ojo area of Lagos capsized Thursday at about 8.30 pm while returning from work.

A passenger who identified himself as Peter, told Saturday Vanguard that the incident occurred when the operator of the boat tried to maneuver his boat from another oncoming boat but eventually lost control. Protest rocks Akwa Ibom over FG’s allocation of oil wells

Akwa Ibom indigenes yesterday took to the major streets in Uyo, the state capital, protesting alleged Federal Government’s inequitable allocation of oil blocs.

The carnival-like protest was championed by a socio-cultural organisation, Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio.

The protesters carried placards with various inscriptions, calling on the Federal Government to address the injustice in the allocation of oil blocs.

CAIRO (AFP) – Three bombs hours apart hit Cairo police headquarters and policemen in the Egyptian capital Friday killing at least five people on the eve of the anniversary of the 2011 uprising against Hosni Mubarak.
The first bomb struck the Cairo security directorate around 6:15 am (0415 GMT), killing four people and wounding more than 70, the health ministry said.

LASU shut down indefinitely after students protest

The management of the Lagos State University (LASU) has closed the state-owned university indefinitely following what it termed ‘violent protest by the students”.

This decision was contained in a bulletin, dated 23rd January, 2013, titled LASU management Closes University indefinitely.

The statement reads, “In the wake of the violent protest by some affected students of Lagos State

University (LASU) over the closure of the university portal for registration of courses for rain semester 2012/2013 examination, the university management has decided to shut down the university indefinitely. Also, examinations have been put off till further notice.

With this decision, students are expected to vacate the university premises until further notice”.

It will be recalled that the students staged a peaceful protest on Wednesday, 22nd January over the closure of the portal but the protest became violent on Thursday.

This came a day after the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly; Rt. Hon.
