Guests Disperse As Swearing-In Of Justice Tsoho As Acting CJ Of FHC Fails To Hold

Twenty-four hours after Justice Adamu Abdu-Kafarati retired as the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, nobody has been sworn in to replace him as of Friday.

The scheduled swearing-in of the next most senior judge of the court, Justice John Tsoho, as the Acting Chief Judge of the court, failed to hold on Friday.

Guests, including a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Michael Andoakaa (SAN), who were at the Supreme Court for the event scheduled to take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday have dispersed.

Also, another judge of the court, Justice Mojisola Olatoregun, who was also at the ceremonial court of the apex court left around 10:40 a.m. when there was no sign in sight that the event would hold.
Justice Tsoho was also at the venue briefly before he left.

No formal announcement cancelling the event was made on Friday, although press invitation was issued by the apex court earlier on Thursday.

Although the oath-taking by Tsoho was supposed to be presided by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, there were speculations on Friday that the CJN refused to show up for the event on the grounds that he had yet to receive any communication from President Muhammadu Buhari in respect of the appointment.

Termites Ate My School Certificate – CJN Tanko Muhammad

An affidavit which Tanko Muhammad, the new Chief Justice of Nigeria submitted to the Senate last week ahead of his confirmation as the head of the Supreme Court, revealed claims of termites destroying his primary school certificate.

He alleged that his documents were destroyed beyond recovery, following a termite invasion at his Bauchi State home in 1998. “No portion of the certificate was salvaged,” Mr Muhammad said.
It was further learnt that the new Supreme court head swore the affidavit on February 13, 2002, while he was a judge at the Jos Division of the Court of Appeal and before he became a Supreme Court judge in 2007.

Justice Tanko Mohammed was sworn-in today as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria by President Buhari, following a senate confirmation.

Shehu Sani Reacts To US Govt’s Visa Ban On Some Nigerian Politicians

Former lawmaker representing Kaduna Central in the Senate, Shehu Sani has reacted to the United States government’s visa restrictions on individuals responsible for undermining the Nigerian democratic process during the last general elections.

A spokesperson of the U.S. Department of State, Ms Morgan Ortagus, who announced this in a statement on Tuesday, said the action applied to those responsible for election-related violence.
Ortagus said the unnamed individuals had “operated with impunity at the expense of the Nigerian people and undermined democratic principles and human rights”.
Sani, while reacting, described the visa restriction by the US government as a welcome development and urged other countries to toe the same path.
According to him, the latest decision indicates that “national laws aren’t enough deterrent”.
Sani, on his Twitter page, wrote:

“The announcement by the US to impose visa restrictions on persons who ‘undermine democracy’ by their role in the last elections is a welcome development; other nations should emulate this.
“Its clear that national laws aren’t enough deterrent.”
