FG appoints Med-view Airline to participate in evacuation of Nigerians from Libya

The Federal Government has appointed Med-View Airline, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to participate in the evacuation of 5,037 Nigerians from Libya.
The Airline’s Executive Director, Business Development and Commercial, Mr Isiaq Na’Allah, and Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, the spokesman of NEMA, South-West Zone, confirmed the development in Lagos on Saturday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the agreement was signed between the parties on Friday in Abuja. It is expected to facilitate the smooth repatriation of Nigerians from the volatile North African country.
The agreement was signed on behalf of the airline by Na’ Allah, while the Director-General of NEMA, Alhaji Mustapha Maihaja and Mrs Fatima Bukar, a Senior Legal Officer of NEMA, signed on behalf of the agency.

Those redeployed include major generals and brigadier generals.
The redeployment takes effect from 2nd January 2018.
A statement announcing the development read: “The Nigerian Army has today Friday 29th December 2017, released the 2017 Fourth Quarter Postings and Appointments of its Officers. It will be recalled that recently some senior officers were promoted to the ranks of Brigadier Generals and Major Generals respectively, while some have also left service on completion of mandatory years of service in the Army. The posting is also aimed at injecting new hands to further actualize the vision of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General TY Buratai, which is “to have a professionally responsive Nigerian Army in the discharge of its Constitutional roles”.

Controversy As Hoodlums Attack Jonathan’s Ex-aide’s Home in Bayelsa

There was controversy Thursday over the attack on the home of a former aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, late Mr Oronto Douglas, by an armed gang in Okoroba, Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
Okoroba is the hometown of the late Douglas, a former commissioner for information in Bayelsa and later Special Adviser to Jonathan on Research and Documentation.
While the Bayelsa Police Command Thursday denied knowledge of the attack by the unidentified gunmen, the family insisted that several distress calls were put through to the leadership of the command, but no help came.
Spokesman of the Bayelsa Police Command, Mr Asinim Butswat, said that the command was not aware of the incident.
However, Mr Gift Douglas, a younger brother to Oronto, said that he personally reported the incident as it was happening to the police high command as well as the Nembe Police Division, adding that some gunmen, numbering about 15, on Tuesday, December 26 night attacked Okoroba community carting property worth millions of naira.

6,672 Nigerians voluntarily returned from Libya in 12 months

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Friday said a total of 6,672 Nigerians voluntarily returned from Libya from Jan. 6 to Dec. 28.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Director General of NEMA, Alhaji Mustapha Maihajja, made this known while receiving a fresh batch of 257 Nigerians who arrived from Libya.
Maihajja lauded the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) for their efforts at continuing the repatriation exercise even during the festive season.
The DG who was represented by the Southwest Coordinator of NEMA, Alhaji Suleiman Yakubu, enjoined the returnees to join hands with various government agencies to tackle the problem of human trafficking in the country.
He said they should assist the government in identifying the traffickers who had lured and deceived many young Nigerians to embark on the perilous journey with the promise of taking them to Europe.

Botswana queen wins Miss Africa beauty pageant 2017

Botswana queen, Gaseangwe Balopi, 21, has won the second edition of the Miss Africa beauty pageant hosted by the Cross River Government.
Balopi emerged the 2017 African queen at the keenly contested event after a fourth round of appearances in different attires by 25 contestants.
The red carpet event started at round 10.45 pm on Wednesday night at the Calabar International Convention Centre and ended around 3 a.m on Thursday morning.
She is to take home  $35,000 and a Ford Edge Sport Utility Vehicle as her star prize.
Miss Rwanda, Fiona Naringwa and Miss Luyolo Mngonyama of South Africa were first and second runners-up. Naringwa will take home  $10,000 and Mngonyama $5,000.
Governor Ben Ayade  said that the theme of the event `Climate Change and Migration’ was chosen to create awareness on the need to protect the environment and caution youths against illegal migration.
Ayade said that the event afforded the African continent the opportunity to choose another beauty queen that will use her beauty to create awareness on the need for Africans to see themselves as one.

Four killed, 13 wounded in Borno suicide bomb attack
No fewer than four persons were killed in a suicide bomb attack on Thursday at Amarwa community of Konduga Local Government Area of Borno.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident occurred at about 2 p.m. when a male suicide bomber infiltrated the village and detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) strapped to his body.
An eye witness, Bukar Fantai, told NAN that the bomber managed to sneak into the village disguising as a grain merchant.
Fantai said that the insurgent first approached a shop keeper and offered sorghum for sale.
He said the terrorist, thereafter, went to a shade where many villagers gathered for relaxation and detonated the explosive.

Abuja residents spend Christmas in petrol queues

Most Abuja motorists celebrated Christmas on long queues at filling station as the scarcity of petrol continue in the territory.
It was observed long queue in most fuel stations visited on Monday, which included NNPC, Oando and Total filling stations.
Mr Chris Abiti, in an interview with NAN, said he and his family have been at the NNPC Mega Station in Central Area for more than an hour and it’s getting closer to his turn.
Abiti said that something urgent needed to be done to avert the recurrent scarcity during festivities, especially Christmas and New Year seasons.

Fuel Scarcity: Buhari says situation will improve soon

Buhari assured Nigerians that relevant government agencies will continue to provide updates on the lingering fuel scarcity issue. The lingering fuel issue  across the country is making the approaching Yuletide and New Year celebrations sour for many travellers as the fares on land, air and sea transportation have soured beyond their estimation.His Excellency, President Muhammad Buhari has however broken his silence on the matter, saying he had directed regulators to end the hoarding of petrol and price hike.
